In Berlin
“In Berlin,” directed by Ciro Cappellari and co-directed by Michael Ballhouse, is an engaging look at human relationships set in the lively city of Berlin. The film explores the characters’ lives, highlighting their challenges, goals, and the connections that shape their experiences. Cappellari’s vision is enhanced by Ballhouse’s cinematic skills. Together, they create a poetic film about the city and the talented people who make it unique: less busy and flashy than Paris or London, but perhaps even more inspiring. Among the diverse ‘Berliners’ featured are Alex Hacke, a bassist in the band Einstuerzende Neubauten, and his partner Danielle di Picciotto, a performance artist and co-founder of the Love Parade. Other notable figures include actress Angela Winkler and her daughter Nele, who has Down syndrome but pursues her career on various Berlin stages; author Peter Schneider; Berlin’s mayor Klaus Wowereit; German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier; a Turkish shop owner; a DJ; fashion designers; a rapper; artists; and architects. This vibrant mix of individuals is realizing their dreams in Berlin and helping to reshape the city.
